Speed Up Chrome’s Startup Time by Blocking Background Tabs

To reduce Firefox’s memory usage, I’ve tried Firemin and introduced some other Firefox add-ons that can help to monitor Firefox memory usage. However, we all know it is tough to keep memory usage low if you are running Firefox browser and then I switched to Google Chrome.

Compared to Firefox, Chrome will not eat up all the memory. But it also has its drawbacks and one of the most annoying things is to spend much time the browser window to reopen after an unexpected crash. Why? Chrome tends to open everything that you’ve visited before that crash, which is unresponsive and eat more memory in one second! So obviously it will waste some more time on restore all the windows.

You see, when reloading the windows, Firefox won’t load all the tabs from previous session on startup automatically to ensure you can reload browser quickly. So will Chrome add this feature to improve the startup time?

With an extension named FooTab, Google Chrome will solve this problem successfully. Inspired by the BarTab add-on for Firefox, FooTab lets Chrome load tabs on demand, instead of getting all pages and tabs loading automatically.

FooTab works for 10 seconds on Chrome’s startup, blocking tabs that are not active from any web requests. Then the web traffic is restored and it only monitors the tabs that were previously blocked to reload them when they are activated after the 10 seconds.

Of course this is just an extension developed over a weekend. It is not so perfect and it needs some time for improvements. For example, the 10-second delay may be customizable in the future so that we can choose a delay we want.

How to Bring Firefox’s All Tabs Preview Feature Back

The Firefox’s All Tabs preview feature has been cut by Mozilla in the latest Firefox 21. It is not a bug. Instead, Firefox has removed all the code relevant to this feature and you will not try this feature in the future if you do not do anything.

So, do you plan to fix this problem and bring it back?

A Firefox add-on named All Tabs Restorer appears and restores the All Tabs preview feature to avoid Firefox killing the previews in Firefox 21. After the installation, to preview the Firefox tabs, you can click the menu icon of All Tabs Restorer, or press keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Shift-Tab, then you will find it shows all tabs in a grid.

I do not understand the decision of Firefox 21. In fact, I almost cried when I found they had killed the preview feature in the latest version of Firefox. Fortunately, All Tabs Restorer helps me to get it back now!
