What is the Third Step in a Model of Analysis for Biomechanics?

Biomechanics is the study of physics, engineering, biology, mathematics, and human physiology. It explores how the human body moves and interacts with its environment based on physical factors, such as the bone and joint system. The following guide explores why understanding biomechanics is beneficial for your health. 

Biomechanics also explores how internal and external forces can impact the body. In particular, it explores how changes in current lifestyles can have a negative impact on human health. 

Early humans evolved for high levels of physical activity. However, modern lifestyles have reduced the activity level of the average person significantly. The average adult spends approximately 11.5 hours sitting each day. When an individual sits for an extended period of time, the spine is stretched into an unnatural state. This can substantially increase the risk of spinal column injuries and degenerative disk disorders later in life. 

In addition, changes in the way that people interact with work equipment can increase the risk of injuries. Biomechanics and ergonomics are closely related. For example, some factory jobs require an individual to perform a repetitive task for eight to 12 hours. During this time, muscles can become significantly fatigued. In addition, repetitive labor can even result in permanent nerve damage. This is known as carpal tunnel syndrome. When an individual performs repetitive tasks for an extended period of time, it can cause significant inflammation of the myelin coating that surrounds nerve fibers, says Linda from National Biomechanical Institute. Over an extended period of time, this can result in nerve damage and a loss of sensation in an individual’s peripheral limbs. 

Finally, it’s biomechanics also deals with the way the body responds to injuries. For example, if an individual has an injured leg, he or she may limp. When an individual limps, this places stress on the spine. Since the spine isn’t designed to support a body in the same way when an individual limps, this can increase the risk of degenerative spinal conditions over a long period of time.
